John Reading Plan | Week 15, Day 3

Prayer

Pause for a moment of quiet and stillness. To center yourself fully, take a deep breath in and exhale slowly. Repeat this process three times. Ask God to open your eyes to the amazing truths in His word today.

Bible Reading: John 12:20-26

Read these verses three times slowly.

Now there were some Greeks among those who went up to worship at the festival. They came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee, with a request. “Sir,” they said, “we would like to see Jesus.” Philip went to tell Andrew; Andrew and Philip in turn told Jesus.

Jesus replied, “The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. Very truly I tell you, unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a single seed. But if it dies, it produces many seeds. Anyone who loves their life will lose it, while anyone who hates their life in this world will keep it for eternal life. Whoever serves me must follow me; and where I am, my servant also will be. My Father will honor the one who serves me.

Reflection & Questions

Jerusalem would have been bustling during Holy Week, as people came from all over the known world to celebrate Passover. As we see from today’s reading, this wouldn’t have just been Jews, but also God-fearing gentiles as well.

The gentiles in today’s verses had heard about Jesus and asked of his disciples, “We would like to see Jesus.” This message is passed on and Jesus’ response seems rather strange. He talks about the death of a kernel of wheat. What is Jesus getting at?

Jesus is talking about the principle of multiplication, and the idea that His Kingdom is going to be full of many more nations than just the Jewish one.The disciples could well have been thinking Jesus didn’t have time for these Greeks, He’s come to be King of the Jews. However, Jesus says His death will “produce many seeds.” It will open the door to “anyone” and “whoever”. Salvation is not a birthright (as the Jews thought), but, “Whoever serves me…my Father will honor.”

      1. What word or phrase sticks out to you from today’s verses? Why?
      2. Jesus says that those who are saved will serve and follow Him. Is your life showing the fruit of serving and following Jesus?
