John Reading Plan | Week 2, Day 1

Prayer

As you spend time with Jesus, allow your mind and body to settle until you feel fully present. Ask Him to help you learn more about Him today.

Bible Reading: John 2:1-5

Read these verses three times slowly.

On the third day a wedding took place at Cana in Galilee. Jesus’ mother was there, and Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding. When the wine was gone, Jesus’ mother said to him, “They have no more wine.” “Woman, why do you involve me?” Jesus replied. “My hour has not yet come.” His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.”

Reflection & Questions

In John 2, we are still in John’s telling of the first week of Jesus’ ministry. John tells us here, “On the third day a wedding took place.” We don’t know who the bride and groom are, but we know Mary, Jesus and his disciples were invited. And we know there’s a problem. The wine had run out. A wedding feast without wine in those days would have brought shame for the hosts, the bride and groom. Mary, with a mother’s word and surely telling gaze, tells Jesus, “They have no more wine.” Jesus’ reply is not rude, but politely trying to distance himself from the situation. His “hour” we will see in John is His crucifixion and the revelation that He is the Messiah – which He seemingly isn’t ready to reveal. Mary, perhaps in her love for the bride and groom, and with her mother’s intuition, simply tells the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.” Tomorrow, we will read what happens next, but Mary’s words are good for us today. “Do whatever he tells you.” Just in the gospels, there are 55 or so instructions Jesus gives us. How often do we hear those instructions and do them? How often do they go in one ear and out the other? James, Jesus’ brother, tells us in James 1:22, “Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.” Sounds a lot like his mom… “Do whatever he tells you.”
