Prayer

Bible Reading: John 2:23-24

Read these verses three times slowly.

Now while he was in Jerusalem at the Passover Festival, many people saw the signs he was performing and believed in his name. But Jesus would not entrust himself to them, for he knew all people.

Reflection & Questions

There is so much in these two short verses at the end of John 2. It’s the Passover Festival. Jerusalem would have been crowded as people came from all over Israel to celebrate what God has done. It is here and on this occasion that Jesus began performing many miracles. We’re not told here what these miracles were, but we can imagine that the blind, deaf, lame and others were healed. Jerusalem was filled with stories of people’s lives being changed, and people were believing in Jesus. But what kind of belief was this? It was not a belief that Jesus trusted. It was a belief based on signs. It was a belief based on getting what they wanted. What if they got hard things? What if he challenged their assumptions? Would they still believe then? Maybe. Maybe not. In fact, what we will see in the coming chapters is that these people who “believed in his name” turn around and reject Jesus when He starts teaching hard things. It’s an important lesson for us. To truly believe is to be “all in” with Jesus. When He leads us down hard paths. When He challenges our sin. When He calls us out of our comfort zone. Untested faith is simply words at that point. Faith that survives the fire of trial is faith we can know is true.
