Prayer

As you spend time with Jesus, allow your mind and body to settle until you feel fully present. Ask Him to help you learn more about Him today.

Bible Reading: John 4:1-9

Read these verses three times slowly.

Now Jesus learned that the Pharisees had heard that he was gaining and baptizing more disciples than John— although in fact it was not Jesus who baptized, but his disciples. So he left Judea and went back once more to Galilee.

Now he had to go through Samaria. So he came to a town in Samaria called Sychar, near the plot of ground Jacob had given to his son Joseph. Jacob’s well was there, and Jesus, tired as he was from the journey, sat down by the well. It was about noon.

When a Samaritan woman came to draw water, Jesus said to her, “Will you give me a drink?” (His disciples had gone into the town to buy food.)

The Samaritan woman said to him, “You are a Jew and I am a Samaritan woman. How can you ask me for a drink?” (For Jews do not associate with Samaritans.)

Reflection & Questions

Last week, we read of the one-on-one conversation between Jesus and a Jewish religious leader. This week, in John chapter 4, we read another one-on-one conversation. It couldn’t be with someone more opposite: a samaritan woman with a quite a past. But what we will see is that Jesus has just as a spiritual conversation with her as he did Nichodemus.

Interestingly in these first few verses of John 4, the humanity of Jesus really comes out. John tells us that Jesus was “tired” from the journey. Jesus asks the woman for a drink – he’s thirsty. Jesus fully experienced humanity. He got tired and thirsty, felt pain and loss, love and betrayal, and more. It is a true comfort to hold onto that our Savior, our Lord, knows what we are walking through.

It is shocking to the woman that Jesus, a Jew, would converse with her. Little did she realize that what should have been even more shocking, was that the Messiah, the King of Kings and Lord of Lords, wanted to converse with her. Whether male or female, rich or poor, steeped in religion or losing religion, Jesus is always ready for a conversation. That’s our God! Only the proud should fear approaching Jesus. The contrite in heart, the needy, the doubtful, the hurting, the lost are always welcome into His presence. He will listen and respond.

      1. What trials are you walking through in your life right now? Do you believe Jesus can empathize with that? Talk to Him about what you are facing.
      2. Do you take for granted the ability to pray to Jesus? Express your gratitude to Him that you can speak with Him.
