John Reading Plan | Week 8, Day 2
Prayer
Give your soul a moment of silence to align with your body. Express gratitude to God for the opportunity to be with Him and invite Him to meet you at this time.
Bible Reading: John 13:6-11
Read these verses three times slowly.
He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, “Lord, are you going to wash my feet?”
Jesus replied, “You do not realize now what I am doing, but later you will understand.”
“No,” said Peter, “you shall never wash my feet.”
Jesus answered, “Unless I wash you, you have no part with me.”
“Then, Lord,” Simon Peter replied, “not just my feet but my hands and my head as well!”
Jesus answered, “Those who have had a bath need only to wash their feet; their whole body is clean. And you are clean, though not every one of you.” For he knew who was going to betray him, and that was why he said not every one was clean.
Reflection & Questions
By Ken Mullette
At this moment, Peter is faced with something he doesn’t understand. Jesus, whom he recognizes as his Lord and Master, takes on the role of a servant, a position so counterintuitive to Peter’s expectations of the Messiah. Peter’s immediate response is resistance. He cannot reconcile the idea of Jesus, the Messiah, performing such a humbling and seemingly inappropriate task. What Peter doesn’t realize is that Jesus isn’t just washing feet; He is teaching a profound lesson about God’s Kingdom.
Peter’s journey here teaches us about trust. We don’t always need to understand everything in order to follow Jesus. It’s about surrendering to God’s will, even when we can’t see the bigger picture. Like Peter, we are often faced with moments where we don’t have the answers, and that’s okay. What matters is our willingness to trust and take the next step, even when we feel uncomfortable.
Much like Peter in this moment, there are times in our lives when we find ourselves in situations where we don’t have all the answers. Whether it’s in relationships, work, or spiritual growth, there can be a feeling of frustration when we can’t see the full picture. It’s uncomfortable not knowing what’s next, or what God is doing in a specific situation. But just as Jesus gently invited Peter into deeper understanding, He invites us, too, into a space of trust, where not having all the answers becomes part of the journey.
- Have you ever found yourself resisting something God was doing because you didn’t understand it?
- How can you shift from resistance to trust in those moments?
