Mixtapes Reading | Week 3 | Day 4
Prayer
Take a moment to be silent and still. In order to be fully present in body and mind, take a deep breath in and let it out slowly. Do this three times. Ask God to give you His wisdom today.
Bible Reading: Psalm 95
Read these verses three times slowly.
Come, let us sing for joy to the Lord;
let us shout aloud to the Rock of our salvation.
Let us come before him with thanksgiving
and extol him with music and song.
For the Lord is the great God,
the great King above all gods.
In his hand are the depths of the earth,
and the mountain peaks belong to him.
The sea is his, for he made it,
and his hands formed the dry land.
Come, let us bow down in worship,
let us kneel before the Lord our Maker;
for he is our God
and we are the people of his pasture,
the flock under his care.
Today, if only you would hear his voice,
“Do not harden your hearts as you did at Meribah,
as you did that day at Massah in the wilderness,
where your ancestors tested me;
they tried me, though they had seen what I did.
For forty years I was angry with that generation;
I said, ‘They are a people whose hearts go astray,
and they have not known my ways.’
So I declared on oath in my anger,
‘They shall never enter my rest.’”
Reflection & Questions
We are continuing this week to look at Psalms that declare the greatness of our God. Today’s psalm invites us to worship Yahweh in response to His greatness.
This worship isn’t to be half-hearted. The psalmist calls us to give all of ourselves in worship – we’re not to hold anything back! He says, “sing,” “shout,” “come before Him,” use “music and song,” “bow” and “kneel.”
Why would we do this? Did you notice the two “fors” in the psalm? This tells us why! The first “for” tells us to worship because He is the mighty God, the one who created everything. The second “for” tells us to worship because He is “our God” and we are well taken care of as His sheep.
Unfortunately, the people of Israel, instead of worshiping and following their Shepherd, have a habit of hardening their hearts. To reject the voice of God. The psalmist warns the reader of that direction. People who harden their hearts will “go astray” and will never “enter [God’s] rest.”
The choice is clear in this Psalm. Either give ourselves fully to God – and be Shepherded by the Mighty Creator. Or harden our hearts and go astray, never to find His rest.
- What words or phrases stick out to you from this psalm?
- Are you worshiping God with your whole life or are you hardening your heart? How do you know?
